| Employed veteran at Century Villages at Cabrillo. |
More Than Shelter supports the Century Villages at Cabrillo, an ingenious re-use of a former U.S. Naval housing site. This 26-acre facility is the largest, most comprehensive residential social service complex of its kind in the country, serving veterans and their families with a variety of programs including substance abuse treatment, employment training and placement, residential employment, and special programs for female, Native American, senior, and disabled veterans. Homeless families and youth are also served, with programs such as child care, a school for homeless children, and after-school tutoring.
The program at the Villages at Cabrillo has an 85% success rate in getting homeless veterans back to work within 35 days. Many have gone on to start their own small businesses, and even purchase their own homes.
The latest phase of development, completed in 2004, is the Cabrillo Plaza Apartments complex where veterans who have successfully found employment can rent their own apartment—a final step to independence. When all phases are complete, the facility will serve 1,800 men, women and children annually.
Donations ensure that more homeless veterans will be helped off the street—experiencing restored hope, stability, and purpose.
